Job Overview:
The Electrical Drafter is responsible for creating detailed electrical drawings and schematics for building systems, specifically within the scope of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) projects. This role involves collaborating with engineers, architects, and other team members to produce accurate, high-quality plans that ensure electrical systems meet design specifications, codes, and client requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Drafting Electrical Systems: Create detailed electrical drawings, layouts, and schematics for residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, including power distribution, lighting, wiring, and electrical panel systems.
- Collaborate with Engineers: Work closely with electrical engineers to translate their designs into comprehensive, accurate drafts, ensuring compliance with local and national codes, such as NEC (National Electrical Code).
- Revise Drawings: Modify and update drawings as required to reflect changes in design or client specifications.
- Design Support: Provide drafting support in the design of low-voltage systems, such as fire alarms, security systems, data/communications, and audio/visual setups.
- Ensure Accuracy and Quality: Review drafts to ensure the accuracy and completeness of electrical systems, layouts, and components. Ensure all drawings are consistent with project requirements, specifications, and relevant standards.
- Documentation and File Management: Maintain and organize all drafts, files, and project documentation for easy access and updates.
- Code Compliance: Ensure electrical designs meet industry standards and regulations, including safety codes and building codes.
- Coordination with Other Disciplines: Coordinate with the mechanical, plumbing, and architectural teams to ensure the integration of electrical systems within the overall building design.
- Project Support: Assist in the preparation of electrical cost estimates, project schedules, and material take-offs when required.
- Quality Control: Verify that all work complies with the company’s drafting standards and quality control procedures.
Qualifications:
- Education: Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Drafting, or related field preferred. Alternatively, completion of technical training in electrical drafting.
- Experience: At least 2-3 years of experience in electrical drafting, preferably within an MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) firm or similar industry.
- Software Proficiency: Proficient in AutoCAD and other relevant drafting software (Revit, Bluebeam, etc.). Familiarity with electrical design software such as ETAP, SKM Power Tools, or similar is a plus.
- Knowledge: Understanding of electrical systems, components, and principles. Familiarity with relevant codes and regulations (e.g., NEC, NFPA).
- Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail and ability to produce high-quality, accurate work.
- Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with engineers, architects, and other team members.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to identify design or drafting issues and offer solutions.
Desired Skills:
- Familiarity with BIM (Building Information Modeling) tools.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
Work Environment:
- Office setting with occasional site visits as required by the project.
- Collaborative environment working alongside engineers, architects, and construction teams.
