Position Summary
We are seeking a Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS/PLS) to lead and manage surveying operations in support of land development and transportation engineering projects. This role is responsible for overseeing survey crews, ensuring technical accuracy, maintaining regulatory compliance, and supporting project delivery from proposal through construction.
The ideal candidate brings strong leadership, technical expertise, and experience working collaboratively with civil engineers, transportation teams, and public agencies.
Key Responsibilities
Project & Technical Oversight
- Manage and oversee boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, route, right-of-way, and construction surveys
- Prepare and review plats, legal descriptions, easement exhibits, and survey deliverables
- Provide survey control for land development and transportation design projects
- Review field data, calculations, and mapping for accuracy and compliance
- Ensure adherence to state surveying regulations and professional standards
Field & Office Coordination
- Supervise and mentor field crews and office technicians
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate survey activities to meet project deadlines
- Implement and maintain QA/QC procedures
- Evaluate and recommend appropriate survey technology and equipment
Client & Agency Coordination
- Serve as technical lead and primary survey contact for clients
- Coordinate with municipalities, DOTs, and regulatory agencies
- Support permit submittals and entitlement processes
- Assist engineering teams with design coordination and construction staking
Business & Operational Support
- Prepare scopes of work, budgets, and cost estimates for survey services
- Support proposals and business development efforts
- Monitor project budgets, invoicing, and profitability
- Contribute to strategic growth of the survey practice
Qualifications
- Active Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS/PLS) license in [State] (or ability to obtain via reciprocity)
- Bachelor’s degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred
- 5+ years of progressive surveying experience, including project management
- Experience supporting land development and/or transportation projects
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, Trimble Business Center, or similar software
- Strong knowledge of boundary law, title research, and ALTA/NSPS standards
- Experience with GPS, robotic total stations, and data collectors
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
Preferred Experience
- DOT and right-of-way survey experience
- Experience with UAV/drone mapping
- Multi-state licensure
- Experience managing survey teams within an engineering consulting environment
