Project Mechanical Engineer -Position Overview
The Project Mechanical Engineer is responsible for leading the design, coordination, and successful execution of comprehensive mechanical/HVAC systems for a variety of projects. This role serves as the Engineer of Record (EOR) for assigned projects and provides technical leadership, mentorship, and project oversight to ensure designs meet client expectations, applicable codes, industry standards, and project goals.
The ideal candidate possesses advanced mechanical engineering knowledge, strong design capabilities, project management experience, and the ability to independently make sound technical decisions while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the Engineer of Record for projects developed under their direction, maintaining responsibility for technical accuracy, quality control, and overall design integrity.
- Develop comprehensive mechanical/HVAC designs, including system layouts, calculations, equipment selections, specifications, riser diagrams, schedules, and design documentation.
- Apply advanced mechanical engineering principles and HVAC theory to analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve complex technical challenges.
- Prepare design narratives, engineering calculations, basis-of-design documentation, and project work plans to support successful project execution.
- Review and provide technical direction on the work of engineers, designers, and project team members to ensure quality, coordination, and adherence to project requirements.
- Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced engineers and associates through technical training, design reviews, and professional development.
- Lead internal and client coordination meetings, provide technical recommendations, make informed design decisions, and ensure project objectives are achieved.
- Coordinate mechanical systems with electrical, plumbing, fire protection, architectural, structural, and other disciplines to ensure fully integrated designs.
- Perform site investigations and field assessments with minimal supervision, documenting existing conditions and developing appropriate design solutions.
- Manage assigned projects, schedules, budgets, and deliverables with limited oversight while maintaining client satisfaction and project profitability.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships to support repeat business and long-term partnerships.
- Take personal ownership and accountability for the quality, accuracy, and performance of all work produced.
- Continue developing technical and leadership skills with the expectation of progressing into positions of greater responsibility.
Technical Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline required.
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required.
- Minimum of 4+ years of relevant mechanical engineering design experience required.
- Experience working in a professional A/E consulting office, engineering consulting firm, construction contractor environment, or equivalent setting.
- Advanced understanding of mechanical/HVAC design principles, calculations, equipment, and system components.
- Extensive knowledge of applicable mechanical codes, standards, regulations, and industry best practices, with the ability to apply them effectively to project designs.
- Strong understanding of how electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems impact mechanical design and the ability to coordinate across disciplines.
- Experience developing HVAC calculations, energy models, equipment selections, and construction documentation.
- Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, energy calculation software, photometric software, Microsoft Office Suite, and other engineering design tools.
- Ability to interpret construction documents, specifications, and technical requirements.
- Experience managing multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines in a collaborative environment.
