JOB DESCRIPTION
We are seeking an experienced Studio Lead to provide leadership, project oversight, and operational direction across a studio of active projects. The ideal candidate will be comfortable serving as the Principal in Charge (PiC) or Supervising Project Manager while ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
This position is responsible for the overall client experience, project profitability, workload management, resource allocation, and successful execution of projects within the studio. The Studio Lead will work closely with Project Managers, Supervising Professionals, Studio Leads, and Discipline Leads to balance workloads, maintain project schedules, and support the continued growth of the studio.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as the Principal in Charge or Supervising Project Manager for projects within the studio, or ensure appropriate client management is assigned when necessary.
- Provide overall leadership and direction for studio projects, ensuring alignment with schedules, procedures, and quality standards.
- Take ultimate responsibility for client experience, project timeliness, profitability, and successful project execution.
- Manage staffing and subcontracting needs within the studio.
- Assign studio-related roles and responsibilities while maintaining schedule and revenue targets.
- Monitor and maintain project backlog by identifying and pursuing new opportunities.
- Coordinate overall studio workload, projects, budgets, and schedules.
- Meet regularly with Project Managers and Supervising Professionals to evaluate workload, project needs, and resource capacity.
- Make decisive adjustments to staffing, workload, and resources to ensure projects remain on track.
- Monitor overall studio performance and take action when improvements are needed.
- Resolve operational, project, and technical issues that cannot be addressed by Project Managers or Supervising Professionals.
- Escalate complex issues when necessary.
- Lead weekly planning and coordination meetings with the Studio Administrator, Project Managers, and Supervising Professionals.
- Review project scopes, schedules, budgets, and discipline capacity for current and upcoming work.
- Ensure established dates and deadlines are maintained for all contracted projects.
- Drive project requirements, coordination, and discipline-specific checklists throughout each phase of project execution.
- Coordinate with Supervising Professionals to ensure appropriate project check-ins and peer reviews are completed.
- Balance available resources to ensure projects are executed efficiently while maintaining quality and meeting owner objectives.
Basic Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
- 10+ years of professional experience in the AEC industry.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex projects, teams, budgets, and schedules.
- Experience serving as a Principal in Charge, Project Manager, Studio Lead, or similar leadership role.
- Strong understanding of project profitability, resource allocation, and workload management.
- Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and decision-making skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional licensure or industry certification preferred.
- Experience managing multiple projects and multidisciplinary teams.
- Proven ability to develop and maintain strong client relationships.
- Experience with project planning, staffing, budgeting, scheduling, and quality control.
- Ability to identify operational issues and develop effective solutions.
- Strong understanding of AEC project delivery processes and procedures.
