Job Summary:
The Senior Electrical Designer plays a pivotal role in the design and implementation of electrical systems for MEP projects. This position requires a deep understanding of electrical engineering principles, MEP system integration, and building codes. The Senior Electrical Designer will be responsible for producing high-quality electrical design drawings, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and client requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Electrical Design & Drafting:
- Lead the design and development of electrical systems for various building types (commercial, residential, industrial).
- Prepare electrical layouts, panel schedules, circuiting diagrams, and other detailed drawings using CAD and BIM software (AutoCAD, Revit, etc.).
- Design electrical distribution systems, including lighting, power, fire alarm, emergency, and low-voltage systems.
- Specify electrical equipment such as transformers, generators, switchgear, panelboards, and motor control centers.
- Prepare voltage drop calculations, load calculations, fault current analysis, and coordination studies.
- Project Management & Coordination:
- Manage electrical design aspects of projects from conception through construction.
- Coordinate with mechanical, plumbing, and architectural teams to ensure integrated design solutions.
- Review project specifications, technical requirements, and code compliance.
- Lead design review meetings and contribute to coordination meetings with clients, contractors, and consultants.
- Compliance & Quality Control:
- Ensure that designs comply with national and local electrical codes (NEC, IEC, etc.), industry standards, and safety regulations.
- Perform detailed design checks to ensure accuracy and adherence to project standards.
- Conduct site visits to review design implementation and resolve design-related issues.
- Mentorship & Leadership:
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior and mid-level electrical designers and engineers.
- Lead the development of design concepts and ensure they align with project objectives and timelines.
- Documentation & Reporting:
- Prepare and review project documentation, including design reports, submittals, and change orders.
- Maintain organized design files and documentation for future reference and regulatory purposes.
- Client Interaction & Support:
- Act as the primary point of contact for electrical design matters with clients, contractors, and vendors.
- Address client queries and provide technical solutions to design challenges.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or related field.
- Professional certifications (PE, LEED, etc.) preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5-8 years of experience in electrical design within the MEP industry.
- Proven experience in designing electrical systems for commercial, residential, or industrial buildings.
- Strong background in the use of design software (AutoCAD, Revit, ETAP, SKM, etc.).
- Technical Knowledge:
- In-depth knowledge of electrical codes, standards, and regulations (NEC, NFPA, IEC, etc.).
- Proficient in electrical calculations, including lighting design, power distribution, short-circuit analysis, and coordination studies.
- Familiarity with building systems integration (HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, etc.).
- Software Proficiency:
- Advanced skills in AutoCAD, Revit, and electrical design tools.
- Familiarity with energy modeling software and simulation tools is a plus.
- Communication Skills:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to effectively present technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Leadership:
- Experience leading design teams and coordinating with multidisciplinary project teams.
